Charleroi – South Hainaut region has many dynamic cultural institutions, such as Europe’s biggest photography museum and the contemporary choreography centre of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, Charleroi Danses, of great international renown, the Palace of Fine Arts, the BPS22 (the contemporary design venue for the Province of Hainaut, housed in an industrial structure of glass and iron), the Museum of Fine Arts, the Glass Museum, the Théâtre de l’Ancre, the Eden regional cultural centre, the Vecteur (a showcase of contemporary design), the Rockerill (former Providence forges that today house an urban centre for popular and alternative culture) and the Marble Museum (Rance), focusing on the red marble found throughout the region and seen for example in the Chateau atVersailles, and so on.
A land of folklore, the region of Charleroi– South Hainaut is famous for its ‘EntreSambre-et-Meuse Marches’, recognised in 2012 by UNESCO as a masterpiece of human oral and cultural heritage. Nor should we forget the numerous carnivals organised in the region’s municipalities.
Charleroi – South Hainaut is equally rich in protected tourist sites, such as the Lakes of Eau d’Heure (the largest expanse of water in Belgium), the hanging gardens of Thuin, the site of the ruins of Aulne Abbey and the historic centre of Chimay.
